Damião, a young black priest, settles in a village of European immigrants, tobacco farmers in southern Brazil. Received with disdain, Damião discovers that sinister forces have taken root in the town.
A former beauty pageant winner dreams that her daughter will follow the family tradition and win a Miss contest. However, she has neither the aptitude nor the interest for it. On the other hand, her son seems to have more talent to claim the sash and crown.
