The Soviet border guards received information about an upcoming drug transit in the Far East aboard an American seiner. At the same time, a group of especially dangerous criminals escapes from the strict regime camp. Moving away from the pursuit of border guards, bandits take hostage the crew of the seiner. Soviet border guards, together with the US Coast Guard, are fighting criminals.

This voyage along the Northern Sea Route turned out to be difficult for Captain Gleb Volnov. He is worried about the crew - cadets who are going to sea for the first time. Gleb is also going through a personal drama. His new friend Captain Levin introduced Gleb to his old friend Agniya. But Gleb insulted Agniya with his indifference and realized too late what she means to him.

The film's characters are Pavel, a successful rake journalist who writes on acute Perestroika topics, and an intelligent but free woman (a doctor by profession) who is trying to escape from unnecessary love. A chance acquaintance becomes the beginning of their long difficult relationship on the way to love and mutual understanding.
