Siberia, 1916-1917. Bolshevik Pyotr Sapozhkov is engaged in revolutionary propaganda and agitation in a small Siberian town after the end of his exile. He is assisted by his wife Varya. After the February Revolution, the Bolshevik party is still outlawed, Pyotr and Varya go into hiding and face arrest. The guards manage to capture their son Timu and the boy is taken to an orphanage.

The film tells the life story of the famous Russian scientist, researcher, traveler and pioneer Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay. The film shows the most interesting moments from the life of a scientist and his travels. Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay was the first to land in New Guinea, getting acquainted with the aborigines, their customs. Among the natives of New Guinea, Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay lives for several years. The scientist also falls in love with the daughter of the Vice President of Australia, the film shows the relationship between Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay and his lover.

In July 1942, in the Second World War, the rearguard of the Russian army protects the bridgehead of the Don River against the German army while the retreating Russian troops cross the bridge. While they move back to the Russian territory through the countryside, the soldiers show their companionship, sentiments, fears and heroism to defend their motherland.

A Sleepless Night
Young engineer Pavel Kaurov goes to his first destination — to the port city of Sibirsk. He is appointed to lead a group of cranes: gantry and floating. After several troubles Pavel mastered the port work and received a serious assignment. Meanwhile, his fiancee Nina, an architect by profession, is arriving in Siberia. However, besides Pavel, fellow students came to the station to meet her — Petunin's brother and sister, in whose house she is staying. Soon Annushka, who has long loved Pavel, arrives. From that day on, he had trouble after trouble. After a crane accident, which happened through his fault, the hero pulls himself together and does everything to regain the confidence of the brigade...
