When Olcay's husband commits suicide and leaves a huge debt behind, Olcay and her teenage daughter, Duru, are forced to move to a slum in Istanbul. They find themselves financially dependent on Olcay's only remaining friend, so Olcay starts to look for a job. Without any degree or experience, she tries to survive doing all sorts of odd jobs. Meanwhile, her neighbors, who are completely different from the people in Olcay's old world, begin to get to like the mother and daughter. Some even fall in love.

Gönülçelen is inspired by Bernard Shaw's play 'Pygmalion' and its film adaptation 'My Fair Lady'. The series transports the scene to Istanbul where both Murat and Hasret, the two main characters, live. Murat is thirty years old and a successful musician and music educator who was born and raised in Istanbul. He comes from a long line of respected, rich and noble people. The female protagonist Hasret - on the other hand - was born and raised in one of Istanbul's most impoverished neighborhoods. She is a free spirited young woman with a 'foul' mouth. Hasret makes her living by selling flowers and occasionally singing in a band. Murat hears potential in her untrained voice and takes it upon himself to teach her the secrets of music by giving her a classical training.

Musa and Zeynep had a great love affair and got married years ago. However, while Zeynep is pregnant, she cannot forgive her husband for a mistake and divorces Musa, hiding the fact that she is pregnant. After the divorce, Zeynep tries to survive on her own, raising her daughter Gonca by working as a market vendor and telling her that her father died years ago. Musa, on the other hand, advances his position in the construction industry and moves from business to politics. In the intervening years, Musa loses track of Zeynep and becomes engaged to a journalist. Gonca is now 16 years old and a successful young girl in school life. Zeynep is determined not to ask Musa for help despite the reactions around her and her loneliness. Unaware of each other, father and daughter will learn the truth through a coincidence...
