Chess Story

1938. While the Nazi troops march into Vienna, the lawyer Josef Bartok hastily tries to escape to the USA with his wife but is arrested by the Gestapo. Bartok remains steadfast and refuses to cooperate with the Gestapo that requires confidential information from him. Thrown into solitary confinement, Bartok is psychologically tormented for months and begins to weaken. However, when he steals an old book about chess it sets him on course to overcome the mental suffering inflicted upon him, until it becomes a dangerous obsession.

Midsummer's eve in Nuremberg and the real-life cobbler-poet Hans Sachs and the guild of mastersingers are pursuing their craft of poetry and music according to traditions and rules. A goldsmith's daughter, Eva, and a knight, Walther von Stolzing, fall in love, but Eva's father has promised her to the winner in the forthcoming song contest. Under the wise tuition of Sachs, can Walther learn the mastersinger's art in time to win Eva’s hand and see off a challenge from the foolish town clerk Beckmesser?

Faccio: Hamlet

Hamlet, an opera by Verdi contemporaries Franco Faccio and Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's tragedy, had a "triumphal rebirth" (Deutschlandfunk Kultur) at the Bregenz Festival, where the opera was also recorded for the first time ever. Faccio, who conducted the first performance of Verdi's Aida in Italy and the world premiere of Otello, and Boito, Verdi's librettist of Otello and Falstaff, anticipated the musical language of later Italian verismo composers so their opera combines lovely musical interludes with superb vocal writing. Olivier Tambosi's "excellent staging served it well, with a clear focus on the high points (The Telegraph)". "In the intermission and at the end there was vociferous enthusiasm of the audience for the late first encounter with this music" (Neue Musikzertung).
