Known For
The Dutch Cabaret Album
Compilation of cabaret songs and sketches. Louis Davids sings and acts with Sylvain Poons, Fien de la Mar and Heintje Davids, among others. The film includes such numbers as ‘Naar de Artis’, ‘De volkstuinkoningin’, ‘De draaiende Venus’ and ‘Hollands Hollywood’. Every song was subtitled so that audiences could sing along.
The Tars
After serving in the Royal Navy, Manus, Toon and Dries return to Amsterdam working-class quarter 'the Jordaan'. Back home, they find out things have changed while they were gone; Manus's girl Jans has been unfaithful to him, Toon's father now rejects him on account of his dissolute life and barmaid Auntie Piet has been cooking up a scheme to ruin Dries' relationship with his girl Greet.
Bleeke Bet
In 1930s Amsterdam, greengrocer Bet is involved in illicit affairs with businessman Van Santen. To tighten bonds even further, Bet arranges a marriage between her handsome daughter Jans and the businessman's wacky son Hannes. Jans, however, is in love with tough sailor Ko. Based on the succesful Dutch stage musical by Herman Bouber.
My Wife's Family
Comedy of errors centred around a piano and the baby of a servant girl whose existence is unknown to all, based on the play 'A house full of strife' by A. Duprez and A. Milo Bennet.
De big van het regiment
Diary fragments tell of the arrival of Belgian refugees across the Dutch border in winter 1915. Reserve lieutenant Berkhage returns from the Belgian border with a refugee child. Named "Big" by the company the kid soon becomes the regimental darling.
Bicycling to the Moon
A gentle comedy about three brothers, each of whom inherited something of their deceased father’s personality. Their paths keep crossing in curious ways.
Oranje Hein
Mientje comes from an ordinary working class family. Her father's alcoholism threatens to put an end to her engagement to Herman, her well to do fiancée. When her parents divorce, Mientje comes into conflict with her future mother-in-law. A grim but ultimately hopeful look at marital problems, poverty, lost love and alcoholism in a working class neighbourhood in Amsterdam.
Kermisgasten
Circus artists Jan and Annie are in possession of jewels that were - unbeknownst to them - stolen from the famous Jolly Sisters. Mistaking them for the thieves, two bumbling detectives infiltrate the Dutch theatre-life.
