Lotus Lantern

San Sheng Mu was a kind and beautiful deity who saved the life of Liu Yan Chang, a mortal scholar. The two fell in love and had a son, Chen Xiang. San Sheng Mu's older brother, Er Lang Shen, found out about their romance and led the Heavenly Brigade in pursuit of the family. During this time of peril, San Sheng Mu gave the Lotus Lantern to Yan Chang to protect him and their son. Soon she was captured and pinned beneath Mount Hua. Thereafter, Yan Chang and Chen Xiang hid in a small village, making a meager living. Sixteen years later, Chen Xiang has grown up. One day he discovers that he possesses some mysterious powers, such as the ability to pass through walls. However, these powers begin to attract the attention of Er Lang Shen and Xiao Tian Quan; thus, Yan Chang must tell his son the story of their forbidden past. After learning of his mother's imprisonment at the hands of his uncle, Chen Xiang sets out on a journey to rescue her.

Tang Qing Shan was also influenced by the new thoughts; however, he had been doing a booming business and engaged with Shi Pei Zhen, who was a gifted girl. She had dressed up as a boy and sworn to be brothers with Tang Qing Shan and his best friend, Fei Yong Jia. On the wedding day, armies abruptly flooded in to search houses and confiscate the property under the name of "collusion with parties and coveting the royalty". Tang Qing Shan and his father were arrested. The father died, and Tang Qing Shan was condemned to be in jail forever.

During WWII, Taiwan was occupied by Japan. Hai Sheng, a young man from Taiwan, was deeply influenced by Japanese militarism. He enthusiastically joined the Japanese vanguard and went to the mainland China to participate in the war together with his foster-brother, Yamamoto Ichiro. However, when he witnessed the atrocities of the Japanese army killing Chinese civilians, he only wanted to escape back to his hometown. On the way back home, Hai Sheng met four girls including Ning Yu. Forced by desperation, Hai Sheng agreed to send them to the occupied Nanjing city. Along the way, Hai Sheng not only had to protect the four girls, but also avoided the pursuit of Yamamoto Ichiro, the captain of the vanguard team. In the end, among the four girls, only Sakurako (Ying Zi), who was of Japanese descent, survived. When Ying Zi also saw the true face of the Japanese soldiers, Hai Sheng decided to work hard to cover Ying Zi to break out of the Japanese army camp.
