The Navy 500 years – half a millennium of seas, people and conflicts is a documentary series in seven parts with the sea as the protagonist. The series is about the defense branch the navy and its activities in peace, crisis and war. In addition, the story of why the navy was created and the importance of the sea for Sweden, Swedish interests and its welfare is depicted.

1. The lifeline

Why was the Navy founded? The sea and the coast have always had an important role regarding Sweden's security and interests.

2. The threat beneath the surface

During the world wars, 175,000 mines were laid in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Around 30 percent is estimated to remain on the seabed. An in-depth look at the role of mines in history.

3. Hitler's submarine

Technical visions and the importance of engineering to become superior to a possible enemy. Continuous development is required to meet new threats and adapt the equipment to new tasks.

4. On the open sea

The navy does not only operate near the Swedish borders. The navy's presence abroad is highlighted.

5. The disaster

Hårsfjärden Catastrophe. Three destroyers sank off Märsgarn (Berga) and several sailors and officers died. What just happened?

6. Secret city

The Secret City. The importance of the naval city of Karlskrona for the history of the navy. Karlskrona was built because Sweden needed a naval port that was ice-free throughout the year. This was to ensure that the ships could be at sea all year round.

7. The Navy & the future

It is easier to look back 500 years than to look a few days ahead. The security situation can change quickly and it is important to always be prepared for the unpredictable.
