Britain's Great Cathedrals with Tony Robinson

Over the past 800 years York Minster has been the backdrop to some of the most dramatic events in British history. It houses more than half of all the world's medieval glass and had a succession of outspoken Archbishops.

Canterbury Cathedral is not just one of the most popular tourist attractions in Britain it is also the 'mother church' for more than 85 million people. Tony tells the story of its foundation, rebuilding and of the pilgrims who visited it.

Salisbury Cathedral was moved from atop an Iron Age hill-fort to its present location. Britain's tallest medieval building has witnessed natural disasters, royal feuds and secret wartime operations.

Tony visits Durham Cathedral, one of Britain's first UNESCO World Heritage sites, which is over 900-years-old and stands 218 ft high. When it was first constructed it was the tallest building in England.

Tony looks at the history of the largest cathedral in England. Liverpool Cathedral was designed in the Gothic style by Giles Gilbert Scott, took 74 years to build and was paid for by the people of the city.

Tony explores Winchester Cathedral, the longest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe, one a Britain's oldest cathedrals and stands as a monument to the wealth and power of the Normans.
