Viewers hear not only from the detectives who cracked the cases and the bereaved families who lost a loved one but also from local people who reveal how the murder has changed their tight knit communities forever.
1. Stuart Ludlam
17 September 2009 and tourists out walking in the Derbyshire countryside made a gruesome discovery, the body of man in the boot of the taxi. The victim was identified as local taxi driver Stuart Ludlam and his murder devastated his family and friends and stunned locals in the nearby village of Cromford. But who had committed this terrible crime and what reason could they have to kill this devoted family man? The police investigation centred on trying to trace the mystery caller who had summoned Stuart to his last job at Cromford Station, could that person be responsible for this terrible murder?
2. Roy Tutill
Can the police finally crack the case of the killing of Roy Tutill, Surrey’s longest unsolved child murder? In 1968, 14 year old school boy Roy Tutill disappeared on his way home from school and his murdered body was found 2 days later in a beech tree plantation in the Surrey countryside. The police investigation centered around a sighting of an Austin Westminster car but detectives just couldn’t make headway with this lead and Roy’s killer remained at large. But a cold case review in the late 1990s offered fresh hope. Would this and developments in forensic technology finally catch Roy’s murderer after more than 30 years?
3. Bill Williamson
Surrey police investigate the case of missing pensioner, 82 year old Bill Williamson. Bill was a retired postman who was enjoying his retirement in the village of Milford when he vanished in 2010. Bill was a widower with no children who had recently moved in with his companion Anne. He was well known in Milford village and had a circle of close friends. Police enquiries suggested that had Bill taken a trip to Ireland but was there more sinister reason behind his disappearance? Investigators were in for a shock when the truth about Bill’s killing eventually came to light and his whereabouts finally revealed.
4. Dawn Walker
The discovery of a badly burned body of a woman by a river in the Suffolk Countryside set the police on the hunt for a twisted killer. But who had murdered 37 year old Dawn Walker and why? Police traced Dawn’s last movements and looked into her life. They discovered a woman with a passion for the outdoors and sport, who spent all her spare time at the gym. Detectives investigated the last confirmed sighting of her on CCTV at the gym and interviewed people who knew her. Was her killer someone known to Dawn or was a complete stranger responsible for her gruesome death?
5. Rosemary Windle & Maurece Smith
The brutal double murder of pensioners Rosemary Windle and Maurece Smith shocked the seaside community of Torquay where they lived. Rosemary and Maurece were a well-liked couple who enjoyed their garden, holidays abroad, socialising and fine wine, so who could have had a motive to kill them? The investigation focussed on those who had spoken to Rosemary and Maurece in the days leading up to their deaths, in the hope that it would produce a lead as to the identity of their killer. The police were soon on the trail of a suspect, but would this person evade capture before they could even be questioned?
6. Jane Longhurst
Brighton resident Jane Longhurst had a full time job as a teacher, loved music and playing the viola, and was in a stable relationship, so her disappearance in 15 March 2003 was completely out of character. Sussex Police launched a huge investigation to try and find out what happened to Jane and a huge media campaign ensued. But the worst fears of friends and family were realised when the body of a woman was found 5 weeks later. Where had Jane been during those missing weeks and who had killed her? The truth of what happened to Jane would prove darker and more twisted than anyone feared.
7. André Nunes
Former fashion model and choreographer André Nunes had everything to live for, so his disappearance in September 2005 was completely out of character. André's family were worried by the fact that the door on his flat appeared to have been forced opened and that his disappearance bore all the hallmarks of a kidnapping. The police investigation centred on the estate where he lived in Birmingham but detectives encountered frightened witnesses who were too afraid to talk. What terrible secret were they hiding and where was André now? The sinister truth of what happened to him was darker than anyone feared and the key to this mysterious case appeared to lie in the Worcestershire village of Alvechurch. The story of Andre Nunes who was kidnapped and murdered in a case of probable mistaken identity then buried on a property in Alvechurch near Birmingham.
8. Sophie Lancaster
20 year old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were attacked in a park in the Lancashire town of Bacup in August 2007 and left for dead. The victims were immediately rushed to hospital in a critical condition, their life hanging in the balance. The police immediately launched an investigation and set about tracing everyone who was in the park that night but soon encountered frightened young people too afraid to talk. While Sophie’s boyfriend survived this terrible ordeal, Sophie sadly died and the police were now hunting for a murderer. Sophie and her boyfriend were Goths who stood out from the crowd. Could something as simple as their different appearance be a motive for murder and would the police catch whoever committed this brutal crime?
