Now and Then, Here and There
Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child explotation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often relunctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen.

1. A Girl Admiring the Sunset
Happy-go-lucky boy Shu encounters a mysterious girl, and is drawn into time warp that thrusts him into a hellish future.
2. A Boy and a Mad King
Lala-Ru is captured by Abelia’s men, but her magical pendant escapes with Shu at the last moment.
3. A Feast in the Dark
While imprisoned, Shu meets a fragile blue-eyed girl named Sara who found her way to this hellish future under similar circumstances.
4. Discord
The young soldiers have their marching orders: Search the entire ship from top to bottom for Lala-Ru’s missing pendant.
5. Murder
King Hamdo’s frustration reaches a boiling point as the mission to recover the pendant continues to be fruitless.

The young soldiers are now faced with a tour of duty as they leave Hellywood to seek more soldiers.

While in prison, Shu uncovers an unbelievable mystery and the fate of this hellish future suddenly falls squarely in his hands.

Saikano
Saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet. is a manga, anime, and OVA series by Shin Takahashi, creator of Iihito and Kimi no Kakera. Saikano was originally serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine. A live-action movie adaptation was released in Japan on January 28, 2006 with Aki Maeda starring as Chise. The Saikano manga and anime series has been licensed and is being distributed by Viz Media in English in North America. The anime series is distributed in the UK by Manga Entertainment. Although the city is not mentioned by name in the series, many of the locations used in Saikano can by all probability be found in Otaru-shi, west of Sapporo. The train station, "Hell Hill", the Asahi Observation Hill, the view over the harbor, and the school all have similar looking counterparts in the city of Otaru.
