Plastic Surgery Undressed
Vogue Williams and Mobeen Azhar separate cosmetic surgery fact from fiction. Can watching an operation and speaking to experts help four people decide if surgery is right for them?
Seasons
1. Episode 1
Cosmetic surgery doesn’t get more visible than a nose job. As the most searched for procedure online, it’s kicking off Plastic Surgery Undressed. A poll of 18-30-year-olds commissioned by the BBC reveals that more than half are considering future cosmetic procedures or surgery. Of those who have already taken the plunge, 29% are unhappy with the results. So could knowing more in advance help us make the right decision – whatever that might be? This unique TV event reveals, live, what happens between the before and after photos. Top surgeon Sultan Hassan gives four people who are planning to have surgery ringside seats as he operates on an existing patient. Each of the four are accompanied by a friend or family member with their own views about the surgery. Dannan has been told his nose looks like a Dorito, Ethan wants to feminise his nose as the first step towards transitioning, Nikki still carries the memories of cruel school taunts, and vlogger Marley – a make-up contouring master – still feels he has to apologies for his wonky nose on YouTube. With insights from patients, experts on hand to answer any questions and companions pushing their opinions, the surgery seekers reveal the impact of what they are discovering. After all they have seen and heard, who will still be up for surgery?
2. Episode 2
Today liposculpture is becoming the go-to cosmetic surgery for those desperate for a quick-fix six-pack. Liposuction is all about breaking down and removing fat, but for the body conscious it's what the surgeon can do to those stubborn areas of fat that's attracting a lot of attention. It comes at a time when 18-30-year-olds have never felt under more pressure to have a certain physique - a BBC-commissioned poll of this group revealed that 55 per cent felt reality TV and social media have had a negative impact on their body image. 25% of respondents said they would consider liposuction, of which liposculpture is one method. In this episode, four surgery seekers watch surgeon Amir Nakhdjevani bring back Dave's six-pack after a sports injury, when his enforced time out meant he lost all his previous definition. In the studio, Mark wants the body of Captain America, and the gym just isn't working. For Tyler, his significant weight loss isn't complete without the abs he wants, while vlogger Sarah feels the pressure to always look her best. Laura's enhanced lips did wonders for her confidence, so she now wants a quick fix for her tummy. As Dave's abs are slowly revealed by the surgery, all questions are answered, but it's the appearance of two women with very different experiences of the procedure that brings the risks and rewards to the fore.
3. Episode 3
Plastic Surgery Undressed turns its attention to the UK’s most popular cosmetic procedure, the boob job. Sophie is 24 and has always hated her boobs. Now she’s paying surgeon Amir Nakhdjevani to give her the breasts, and the confidence, she has always wanted. And four potential surgery seekers are getting a ringside view of the entire procedure. They are all accompanied by a friend or family member who has their own views on their operation plans. Amber used to scrape the boobs off her Barbie because she didn’t look the same, while Shaunine says her breasts never grew in the first place and she has always known she would have surgery. Part-time model Chealsie can’t book glamour and lingerie shoots with her current cup size, but her father, Rab, thinks she’s perfect - and that bigger boobs will only attract the wrong kind of attention from men. Imani feels there is pressure within her community to have an hourglass figure, even though surgery itself is quite a taboo subject. As the women have the surgery explained, talk to others who have had the procedure and find out about the health questions raised in recent breast implant headlines, they will share how they feel and how it impacts on their own plans for surgery.
