1964-65. Singapore is a city at a crossroads. Political and racial tensions are at fever pitch as the British pull out, and a new nation is about to be born. The lights of Bugis Street have never burned so bright: bootleg copies of Motown songs boom out from street stalls; the Rolling Stones are in town along with tourists and American sailors fresh from Vietnam. They join British and Australian soldiers checking out the prostitutes and gambling dens, en route to their own war in Borneo. This is the city of Sam Callaghan, Patricia Cheng, the CIA’s Conrad Harrison and the clients of the Cheng Detective Agency. The agency’s cases range from the usual (straying spouses and petty fraudsters) to events with international implications and complications. Sam’s contacts from his military days are useful - but they start to drag him back into a dark world that he would prefer to leave behind.

The Cheng Detective Agency is hired by the CIA to investigate the murder of a US sailor, and Sam Callaghan is asked to help out as a favour to the widowed owner, Patricia.

2. Reach Out

Separated from her husband at the outset of WW2, and not even knowing if he is still alive, a woman returns to Singapore from a long exile in China to search for him.

3. Ball of Confusion

Patricia is attacked and robbed during a riot on her way to a client. She's saved by a Malay journalist who is later accused of being one of the instigators of the riot.

4. Give Me Money

Sam has a conflict of interest when the Cheng Detective Agency is hired to investigate his lover Claire's husband Frank Simpson.

5. Heatwave

When Sam and Claire discover that adulterated medicine is being distributed to sick children in the village, the investigation into who is behind it surprises everyone.

6. Tracks of My Tears

When a newborn baby is left on the doorstep of the agency, Sam and Patricia face a moral dilemma when they uncover the identity of the mother and her family.

7. My Girl

Kang is caught smuggling explosives and Sam works to save him from trial and possible execution. Conrad is shocked to discover that MI6 has a file on his girlfriend Su Ling.

Two Australian girls mysteriously disappear from a ship in Singapore harbour. The case takes an ominous and dangerous turn with the arrival of a ransom note.

When Sam goes out on a limb for an old friend accused of murder, is he making a very big mistake about his hero who once saved his life?

Sam sets out to prove that James Lim was responsible for the murder of Patricia's husband Winston, but uncovers much more. Plus will his lover Claire stay in Singapore?
