Pete Jarrett leaves his secure job in the city and joins his nomadic grandfather Charlie Cole in his search for freedom.

When Pete and Charlie assist Chet Murdoch in transporting his wool to the railway, they get involved in a payroll robbery and a set-up for the crime.

The editor of Black Mountain's town newspaper bitterly opposes a wood-chip industry that the Japanese are financing, causing Pete and Charlie to become involved in some local town politics.
