Young poacher Hendrik van Norden has seriously wounded a game-keeper, who has not recognized him. There was, however, one witness: captain Van Oort, but he promises to keep silent. Five years later Hendrik has become a lighthouse-keeper and is courting Annie. Van Oort is also trying to win Annie's affections, and in his jealousy he decides to remind Hendrik of what he knows about his past...

The King arrives at Calais and meets various military and civilian dignitaries. He is taken to General Haig's château at Beauquesne where with Haig and the Prince of Wales he meets President Poincaré and Generals Joffre and Foch (Lloyd George is seen arriving also - see notes below). The King visits troops of II ANZAC Corps, a Casualty Clearing Station in Second Army area, a church at Cassel and the Canadian Corps area. At La Panne he meets with the Prince of Wales and the Belgian royal family to present decorations to Belgian soldiers. He tours parts of Second Army area and the Somme battlefield, escorted by General Sir Henry Rawlinson, while the battle is in progress. The King then returns to Calais and crosses the English Channel in safety.

All is not well in the Mollheim home. The elder Mollheim decides to marry off his daughter with an unusually large dowry, in exchange for a rare Chinese idol. The daughter of the house, being opposed to the idea, decides to hire a private detective to get to the bottom of it. The detective doesn't get far before the idol is stolen and its owner is murdered.

Scott Wells, a lowly clerk in the offices of railroad magnate David Haldeman, overhears a plot to ruin Haldeman.

Gale Henry, at that time famous as big-nosed, lugubrious-faced purveyor of silent screen slapstick. Here as a prominent villager too interested writing a play to be bothered with lovers. When a wandering director arrives in town, learns of her play and agrees to produce it for her, with the author in the leading role, she is delighted. But the play proves a frost.

Divinity student John Fairmeadow likes his liquor and as a result is expelled from the seminary. He travels out West and lands in a camp where lumberman Batch has just died. He reads the funeral service and befriends the dead man's daughter Pattie.

Farmer Al Falfa goes to New York, money bag in hand. He is immediately spotted by a crook who dispatches a fetching lady to shake him down. At a restaurant, she gets him drunk and lays him out with knockout drops. But what's in the bag is not what she is expecting, and she flees. The now-drunken farmer has stepped dizzily outside to acquaint himself with a lamppost when another sharper steps up and hauls him into a crooked card game. While prospects do not look good for Farmer Al Falfa, he has more tricks up his sleeve than the city slickers realize.
